ACBL Charitable Recognition Award
Beginning in 1960, the ACBL Charity Committee was a key group of volunteers appointed by District Directors to promote bridge charity events and support community causes.
They raised funds through club and tournament games for non-bridge 501(c)(3) charities, with grants distributed to districts and local groups, plus disaster relief.
The committee members received special pins and worked with the Foundation to improve local quality of life, managing funds and assessing community needs. Membership was appointed for lifetime positions, promoting charity games within their area.
Funding came from special charity games at local clubs, district events, and national tournaments (NABCs). Grants were given to districts and NABC committees, who then selected local, non-bridge charities (e.g., food banks, therapy centers, autism foundations). Disaster relief was also provided, with grants awarded to communities affected by disasters like hurricanes. The committee embodied the ACBL's commitment to giving back to communities where bridge players live.
At the Fall 2025 Board of Directors meeting, Motion 253-GV01 transferred independent management of the ACBL Charitable Recognition Award to the ACBL Charity Foundation, continuing the tradition of honoring Members for exceptional dedication to charitable causes.
The 2027 appointees will be the first class under the direction of the ACBL Charity Foundation. This award will continue to honor members who actively promote participation in the ACBL charity program within their unit and sanctioned club games, and who play a key role in ACBL-wide charity events, such as The Longest Day.
