The Sunshine and Daisy Mobile Food Pantry, a nonprofit organization that provides food to underserved communities in the Memphis area, was selected as the recipient of a $5000 donation from the ACBL Charity Foundation. At a check presentation on Thursday, Sunshine and Daisy co-founders Gretchen Gintz and Andrea Denette were on hand to receive the funds from local and national members of the Charity Foundation.

Gintz and Denette say that the mission of the Sunshine and Daisy Mobile Food Pantry is feeding people.

“We currently receive a weekly food donation from a large American chain of supermarkets that specializes in natural and organic foods and from Recover Food, Feed Hope of Holy Communion Episcopal Church. Every Saturday, we distribute food to at least 100 families who live in homes in the Memphis area, individuals who live on the street or in alternative prefab or handmade shelters, and to a men’s recovery program,” said Gintz.

“Sunshine and Daisy Mobile Food Pantry was founded about eight years ago. The name Sunshine and Daisy came from one of our friends who lived on the street. He called us Sunshine and Daisy whenever we would bring him food,” said Denette.

The mobile food pantry travels to neighborhoods throughout Memphis, allowing clients to shop and select items of their choosing. The selection of items is varied and ever-changing, as the pantry often showcases food items left over from large events. All food is carefully maintained at proper temperatures.

According to Gintz, Sunshine and Daisy sometimes even buys food – staples such as beans and rice – and that the Charity Foundation donation will be used for that purpose.

The ACBL Charity Foundation provides $5000 to host committees at each NABC, and the committees then select a local charity in each site to receive the donations.

Local Charity Committee member Carol Paterson says that Sunshine and Daisy was selected because they are a small but effective service.

“Despite the presence of much larger food banks in the Memphis area, every dollar that Sunshine and Daisy receives goes to neighborhoods and folks on the street,” she said.
